Research article:
‘Between adherence and reversibility, pastel chalk as a retouching medium for wall paintings’ 2022
Abstract:
Pastel chalk is not often mentioned as a retouching medium for wall paintings, but it has some good features such as: reversibility, lightfastness and practical in use. Because the low adhesion force is a concern, this research investigated whether the roughness of the surface, the morphology of the pigment and the method of application can influence the adhesion of pastel chalk, and under what conditions the adhesion would be improved without this being at the cost of reversibility. The pastel chalk was examined under SEM, the micro roughness of both substrate and pastel chalk was measured and various adhesion and reversibility tests were carried out by using mock-ups. It has been shown that the macro roughness of the substrates, the method of application and the hardness of pastel chalk do influence the adhesion of pastel chalk on the substrate. But it has also shown that pastel chalk is not completely reversible.

Master thesis
“Wall painting retouching techniques in the Netherlands.” 2020
Abstract:
In the Netherlands there is no standard when it comes to retouching techniques for wall paintings. Research has been done
into the preferences and motivation of conservators to see if there is a division in current practice. The visual perception of
the general public with regard to these different techniques has been examined to see whether conservators and the public
share the same preferences and opinions. Supervisor Jessica Hensel (UvA)
